Clearing the Air: Best TCM Herbs for Nasal Allergies

While we may love the sunshine and blooming flowers, we’re not so fond of the allergies that tend to spring up around this time of year. Nasal congestion, runny nose, phlegm, and sneezing are some of the pesky allergy symptoms that never quite seem to go away. Thankfully, we can look to Traditional Chinese Medicine for a host of herbal remedies for these symptoms.

Cang Er Zi (Xanthium)

The yellow pods, or fruits, of the xanthium bush are used in TCM for its warming properties to dispel wind and damp. It is one of the main herbs used for treating sinus congestion, discharge, and respiratory problems. The herb itself is sweet and bitter in taste and is available as a powder, decoction, or pill. It is important to know that xanthium is mildly toxic, so it is important to be mindful of dosage.

Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum)

Chrysanthemum is associated with the lung and liver qi and has slightly cold properties. The herb clears toxins and dispels wind and heat from the body, making it an effective remedy for cold and upper respiratory symptoms. It also relieves visual symptoms, such as red, itchy, or painful eyes. Chrysanthemum is most commonly consumed as a tea made from the dried flower.

Xin Yi Hua (Magnolia Flower)

Magnolia flowers have warming properties and are associated with the lung and stomach qi. Magnolia flowers clear nasal congestion and discharge and relieves sinus headaches. This herb is commonly made into tea, but can also be taken as a pill and even applied to the skin as an ointment.

Bo He (Mint)

Both the stems and leaves of the mind plant are used in TCM remedies. Mint has cooling properties and is associated with the lung and liver qi. In treating allergy symptoms, mint dispels wind heat, clears the head, eyes, and throat,  and stimulates the nervous system. Mint can be boiled into tea or used as oil.
