The admission

I prescribed melatonin for almost a decade.

I'm not embarrassed to admit it. Melatonin is over-the-counter, low-risk, and for a while it seemed to be exactly what my patients needed. They'd come in tired — sometimes wrecked — and I'd suggest 3 milligrams about an hour before bed and watch them leave looking relieved.

For a lot of them, it worked. For a while. Then they'd come back.

What the second visit looks like

Melatonin is a timer, not a sedative. Most patients learn this the hard way.

Here's what I started noticing in the second visit. The patient who slept well for the first three nights wasn't sleeping well by night ten. They'd up the dose. They'd add diphenhydramine. They'd add wine. And then they'd be back in my office a year later, telling me their nights had only gotten worse.

The science is not subtle once you go looking. Melatonin tells your brain it's nighttime. It does not address why your sympathetic nervous system is still firing at 11 p.m. It does not lower cortisol. It does not quiet a mind that has spent twelve hours in fight-or-flight.

It is the wrong tool for the most common problem. And most of the patients I see aren't lacking melatonin. They're lacking the off-switch.

Most of my patients aren't lacking melatonin. They're lacking the off-switch.

What I learned at Arizona

Sleep is a nervous system problem. Not a hormone problem.

About fifteen years into practice I did a fellowship at the University of Arizona's Center for Integrative Medicine under Dr. Andrew Weil. That's where I started paying serious attention to what Eastern medicine had been treating as common knowledge for two thousand years — a body in a state of stress cannot enter sleep, no matter what you give it.

Traditional Chinese Medicine doesn't talk about melatonin. It talks about the Shen — loosely translated as spirit or mind — and whether it has settled. A settled Shen sleeps. A disturbed Shen does not. Western medicine arrives at the same place with different vocabulary: a parasympathetic nervous system can sleep, a sympathetic one cannot.

What my patients needed wasn't a stronger signal. They needed a way to actually quiet the system that was keeping them up.

Effective long-term
Yes

Designed for nightly use — supports the system, doesn't override it

No

Next-day clarity

No

Morning fog is common with OTC sleep aids

Backed by tradition + clinical research
Yes

Six TCM herbs + GABA with 2,000+ years of clinical use, dosed to research targets

No

A single signaling molecule used outside its biological role

What I recommend now

A formula that calms the system. Not one that fakes the signal.

When patients ask me what they should try instead, I send them to Relax + Sleep. It's a TCM-classical sleep formula — jujube, poria, bupleurum, plus a clinical dose of GABA — and it does what melatonin never could. It quiets the system, then lets your body do the rest.

It is the formula I recommend before reaching for pharmaceuticals. And it's one of the few I actually take myself.

Inside the formula I recommend

Seven ingredients. Clinical doses. Targets the system, not the signal.

Each chosen because the research and the tradition agree. Tap any to read the full ingredient.

People who found their way back to real rest

I stopped waking up at 3 AM after the first week. I've tried magnesium, melatonin, CBD — nothing else came close to this.

Sarah M.Subscriber, 3 months

I was skeptical about herbs for sleep. But the first night I slept through without waking once. No grogginess in the morning. Just… rested.

Jennifer L.Subscriber, 6 weeks

My doctor recommended this after a year on melatonin that had stopped working. Two weeks in and I'm sleeping through the night for the first time since my second kid.

After two decades of helping patients with sleep, what excites me about Relax + Sleep is the way it approaches the problem differently. Instead of simply adding another sleep aid, it supports the body's natural wind-down process by helping calm the mind and nervous system. It's one of the few melatonin-free formulas I feel confident recommending as a first step.
