Got into the warm-cup-before-bed routine after my acupuncturist suggested it. I underestimated how much the ritual itself does. I sleep through the night now.
From my apartment
In TCM, nighttime is when the body repairs itself. So I take my own bedtime seriously.
My clinic in NoMad sees a steady stream of New Yorkers whose nervous systems can't downshift. They are smart, accomplished, exhausted. They have tried melatonin. They have tried magnesium. They have tried podcasts about sleep.
What they usually haven't tried is something my TCM training drilled into me from week one: sleep is a state your body has to be invited into, not commanded. You can't will yourself to sleep. You can only set up the conditions and get out of the way.
This is the routine I do most nights. It's not glamorous. None of it is hard. It just works — and I've watched a version of it work for every patient who actually tries it.
Seven things, in this order.
None of this requires equipment, an app, or motivation. The whole sequence takes about ninety minutes from start to dark — and most nights, the dark comes easier than I expect.
-
9:00 PM
Dim the lights everywhere.
Bright light tells your brain it's still daytime. I switch off overhead lights an hour before bed and use lamps only. The body reads light as a cue — give it the right one.
-
9:15 PM
Stop the news.
Whatever's happening in the world will be there in the morning. Cortisol spikes from late-night doomscrolling are the most common reason my patients can't sleep. The phone is the single biggest insomnia trigger I treat.
-
9:30 PM
Warm water + Relax + Sleep.
This is the herbal step my body actually responds to. I stir a sachet of Relax + Sleep into warm — not hot — water and sit with it for ten minutes.
The herbs are TCM-classical: jujube, poria, bupleurum, the same ones we've used for over two thousand years for sleep. The ritual of sitting with a warm cup while the formula starts to work is doing real nervous-system work, not just hydration.
-
9:40 PM
Two minutes of acupressure.
Press the Shen Men point at the top of each ear's triangular fossa for thirty seconds. Then Yin Tang between the eyebrows — light circular pressure for a minute. These are the points I use on patients before placing needles. You can do them yourself.
-
9:50 PM
Stretch the back of the legs.
Most desk-workers carry stress in the hamstrings and lower back. A two-minute forward fold from sitting on the floor releases more than you'd think. TCM would call this 'moving stuck Qi.' Western language: parasympathetic activation through gentle proprioceptive input.
-
10:00 PM
Phone goes to another room.
Not the bedside table. Not face-down on the nightstand. Another room.
The phone has become Pavlovian — the alarm tomorrow is the same device as the bedtime spiral tonight. Separate them.
-
10:15 PM
Lights off. Don't force it.
If sleep doesn't come in twenty minutes, get up. Read in another room with a dim lamp. Going back to bed only when actually sleepy retrains the association.
It's the single most-effective behavioral intervention for chronic insomnia, and it costs nothing.

From the clinic
Why I keep coming back to herbal formulas.
People are surprised when I tell them I prefer herbs over pharmaceutical sleep aids — even with the Western training in my background. The reason is simple. Pharmaceutical sleep drugs sedate. Herbs invite the body to do what it already knows how to do.
Relax + Sleep was formulated by a TCM herbalist with 20+ years in clinical practice, and it follows what we'd call the classical four-treasure pattern. It's the formula I felt comfortable recommending to patients between visits — and the one I keep stocked in my own kitchen.
Seven ingredients. Clinical doses. Zero filler.
Each one in the formula because TCM tradition and modern research agree.

People who built the ritual — and stayed with it.
I was skeptical of herbs for sleep. The first night I slept through without waking once. No grogginess in the morning. Just rested.
The taste is calming on its own. I've made the warm-water ritual part of my nightly wind-down. It's the only sleep thing I haven't quit.
I recommend this to patients between their acupuncture visits — it's the most accessible TCM sleep formula I've found that actually delivers a clinical-grade dose.
Routines work when you stay on them.
